Health benefits of saffron

Summary : saffron is known spice,in some cases it is used medicinally as a herb. We have often heard that saffron is a must for all expecting moms. Saffron during pregnancy is a must for all women to give birth to healthy, glowing and fairer baby. But it is not true. Till now no such evidence exists for this issue.

Medicinal use of saffron is not considered safe for pregnant women. High doses have reportedly caused contractions and even miscarriages. In fact, saffron is helpful in stimulating proper digestion during pregnancy. The digestion is very slow in expecting moms, so they need some stimulating agents to enhance their ability to digest.

According to Ayurveda taking saffron helps in the movement of the baby’s activity in the stomach. Since moms can feel the movement by 5 months, it is advised they take saffron from the 5th month onwards, when to eat saffron is more important then how to take it. Also saffron tends increase body heat, which is why it is advised a little later in pregnancy take in different modes like sweet, foods etc.

Cause of Saffron in Pregnant women:

Saffron must not be taken alone nor in higher qualities, as it can cause serious body heat. So consume a pinch of saffron with milk. The ‘Golden spice’ is also named as ‘kesar’ or ‘zaffran’. It is highly in demand because of its unique flavor and aroma, which can be added to the foods on use. Kesar has been a prime ingredient in majority of exotic Indian dishes.

However, keep in mind that just because other pregnant women have used a natural product without problems, this does not mean that it is safe. It takes a large group of pregnant women taking a particular medication or herb to see if it increases the risk of problems, such as miscarriages or birth defects, as these problems often occur infrequently.

Usage of Saffron during pregnancy:

These are the things to remember before intaking saffron during pregnancy. How

  • You may start drinking saffron mix milk from the first trimester of pregnancy.
  • If milk consumption is not possible, you may add a few strands of the saffron to rice, side dishes or soups.
  • Add up to 5 strands of saffron to a glass of water to improve digestive abilities and not the skin color of the baby
  • it is always a good idea to talk to your healthcare provider before taking any medication or supplement

The benefits of having saffron during second and third trimester is is helpful in stimulating proper digestion during pregnancy if in first trimester it may lead to miscarriage.
